Indie Travellers uses all local services to ensure that the benefits go back to the host communities. The local activity is run by MESCOT, a community-based conservation and ecotourism project. Your participation supports the Million Trees Project by the International School of Brunei.

ITINERARY

Day 1                Arrive Sandakan.
Transfer to Batu Puteh, a village near the lower Kinabatangan river.
Activities: Briefing and introduction on Kinabatangan community and culture.
Overnight accommodation throughout this programme will be at a homestay. (Dinner)  

Day 2               Floodplain Forests Introduction & Restoration Site Preparation.
Activities: Interpretive forest nature walk, seed collection, site preparation for tree planting and mapping of restoration site and river cruise for wildlife observation. (Fullboard)

Day 3              Floodplain Forests & Restoration
Activities: Wildlife observation, work in a nursery to plant seeds in germination beds and tree planting at forest restoration site. Farewell dinner with cultural perfomance. (Fullboard)

Day 4              Transfer from Batu Puteh to Sukau village on an hour drive.  [New activity]
Activities: Meet the Orang Utan researchers to learn about research and conservation of wild Orang Utans and participate in data collection of the red ape’s behaviour and movement. Overnight at Sukau. (Fullboard)

Day 5              Depart Sukau for Sepilok Orang Utan Research Centre.
Activities: Learning about Orang Utan rehabilitation programme. (Breakfast, Lunch)

ADD ON:Peak of Mt Kinabalu

  • 2 days 1 night Turtle Island, learn more about turtle conservation in the Sulu Sea.
  • 3 days 2 nights Mt. Kinabalu Challenge, climb South East Asia's highest mountain.
